10-Gbit Ethernet Switching Processor Blasts Barriers To The Backbone
by Patrick Mannion

"With 12 1-Gbit ports and one 10-Gbit port, this device places enterprise networks and ISPs firmly on top of the Internet backbone. The AL1032 is the first device for multinode network switches to provide direct access to the Internet over an OC-192 optical connection. The sheer enormity of the data coming in and going out has brought many chip designs to their knees, as a lot more than simply switching must take place. Packet processing occurs that requires packet classification via policy filters, packet identification, and tagging, while routing requires support for multicasting and virtual LANs. Allayer leverages an advanced memory technology and policy engine, along with proprietary hashing algorithms for the lookup table, in order to achieve the modularity and high speed that's required."

Allayer Debuts 10 Gbit Ethernet Switching Processor
by Alex Romenalli

"The patent pending AL1032 is significant because it raises Ethernet speeds from a 1Gbit/sec maximum to 10Gbit/sec.-a tenfold increase in bandwidth. Allayer, based in San Jose, claims this is the first signal processor that allows LAN/WAN environments to connect directly to the internet infrastructure. Enterprise networks and metropolitan-area-networks will connect directly to the Internet infrastructure via high speed OC-192 optical links."

Allayer switching chip carries 10-Gbit Ethernet port
by Craig Matsumoto

"Allayer Communications released a Layer 2 Ethernet switching chip on Wednesday (Aug. 15) that combines an ability to prioritize class-of-service information with a port intended for the upcoming 10 Gigabit Ethernet specification. Allayer (San Jose, Calif.)said its AL1032 chip can directly connect LAN traffic to a network core by combining Ethernet streams into a 10 Gbit/second feed, then sending that feed into the network core at OC-192 (10-Gbit/s) Sonet rates. The conversion from Ethernet to Sonet can be handled easily by an FPGA, Allayer said. The chip could also be used as a direct connection to OC-192 pipes from Internet points-of-presence or enterprise networks. "

Allayer Announces the Industry's First 10-Gigabit Ethernet Switching Processor for Optical Networking
"Allayer Communications, a leading high-bandwidth network IC developer, today announced the industry's first 10-Gigabit Ethernet switching processor. The device is the first to integrate a 10-Gigabit port with twelve 1-Gigabit Ethernet ports operating at full-duplex, wire speed for an aggregated bandwidth of 44 Gbps. The 10-Gigabit port is ten times faster than existing Ethernet chips and it enables Local Area Networks (LANs) to connect directly into the Internet via OC-192 optical links. "

Allayer chip switches Ethernet traffic onto Sonet nets
by Craig Matsumoto

"Allayer Communications (San Jose) has produced what it calls the first chip to switch Gigabit Ethernet traffic onto OC-48 (2.5-Gbit/second) Sonet networks. The ALPOS48 is the first off-the-shelf part to handle the translation between Ethernet packets and Sonet frames."

Allayer says new POS switch abets LAN-to-OC-48 interface
by Darrell Dunn

"Looking to reduce cost and time-to-market constraints associated with custom ASICs, Allayer Communications today will introduce a standard Gigabit Ethernet LAN-to-OC-48 optical-network interface. The ALPOS48 Packet-over-Sonet switch is designed to enable quick production of 2.5-Gbit/s interfaces between LANs and a high-speed optical-network backbone. "

Switcher, Router Cut Costs In Gigabit Ethernet Switch Design

"The AL1022 and AL3000 chip set lets designers of gigabit Ethernet layer 3/4 switches reduce both chip count and cost. The AL1022 is a two-port gigabit Ethernet switch chip, while the AL3000 is a layer 3/4 routing engine that also offers network management. "

Chip set aids Gbit Ethernet switch design

"Allayer Communications has launched a chip set for the design of Gigabit, Layer 3/4 Ethernet switches. It consists of the AL1022 two-port Gigabit Ethernet switch chip and the AL3000 Layer 3/4 routing engine, which provides network management. Each device contains a 12.8- Gbit/second, 32-bit RoX-II interface for engineers to scale their designs and link multiple chips to a variety of switches by linking to other Allayer devices."

Chip set supports Gigabit Ethernet Layer 3/4 switch

"A two-device chip set from Allayer for the design of Gigabit Ethernet Layer 3/4 switches includes the AL1022 Gigabit Ethernet switch. The product supports features such as quality of service (QoS), trunking, and virtual LANs (VLANs) with four classes of service‹Class 0 (management information), Class 1 (voice and video), Class 2 (data), and Class 3 (backup data)‹to ensure faster delivery of higher priority packets.
